MILPITAS, CA--(Marketwire - October 6, 2009) - JDSU (
NASDAQ:
JDSU) (
TSX:
JDU) today announced
that it has shipped more than 100
Q Series UV
lasers for the scribing of wafers used in the manufacturing of light
emitting diodes (LEDs). LEDs are becoming increasingly popular technology
due to their ability to emit brighter light and consume less power.
LEDs produced with the Q Series UV laser are used in products such as
backlit LCD televisions, automotive lighting, and as a more energy
efficient alternative to conventional light bulbs. According to research
firm iSuppli, shipments of backlit LCD TVs that use LEDs will rise to 98.8
million by 2013, accounting for about 43 percent of the global LCD TV
market.
The LED wafer scribing process that utilizes the Q Series UV laser has
become the most widely accepted method for volume LED manufacturing in
recent years because it allows LED manufacturers to achieve increased
yields and lower consumable costs.
"The JDSU Q Series laser is the leading UV laser source for the emerging
LED market based on its proven reputation over the past several years in
the semiconductor and microelectronics markets," said Victor David, product
line manager for the CCOP business segment at JDSU. "Growing popularity of
LED-based consumer goods such as backlit TVs will continue driving demand
for UV lasers."
How the LED Wafer Scribing Process Works
Material for LEDs is grown on a sapphire substrate that is then scribed and
singulated, or separated into individual chips using the JDSU Q Series UV
laser. The chips are then packaged into complete LEDs that are integrated
into end products.
JDSU's Q Series laser benefit LED wafer scribing with the following
features:
-- High energy and beam stability to ensure consistently high yields.
-- High pulse repetition rate and power for high throughput.
-- Stable laser performance that reduces system maintenance over time.
