AtHoc Congratulates UCLA for Winning Government Security News' Homeland Security Award for University's Deployment of AtHoc's Net-Centric Emergency Mass Notification System

UCLA's Deployment of 3rd Generation Mass Notification Technology by AtHoc Wins Award for Innovative and Effective Use of IP-Based Technology to Protect Students and Staff

SAN MATEO, CA--(Marketwire - October 29, 2009) - AtHoc, Inc., the pioneer and leader in network-centric emergency notification systems, today congratulates University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) for receiving the Government Security News (GSN) Homeland Security Award in the "Most Effective State Government Security Program, Project of Agency" category for its emergency alerting system. Winners were announced this week at a GSN gala in New York City in conjunction with the Public Security & Safety and ISC East events.

UCLA was recognized for its BruinAlert™ system, which is built on AtHoc's IWSAlerts™ emergency mass notification solution. In 2007, UCLA deployed AtHoc IWSAlerts as part of its emergency management strategy to protect its campus population of more than 60,000 people. AtHoc IWSAlerts provides a comprehensive, unified system for UCLA that manages alert dissemination across multiple communications channels and physical devices, including network alerting to computer desktops, telephony alerting, email, SMS text messaging, campus sirens, radio, cable TV and California's Emergency Digital Information Service (EDIS).

"Alerting students, faculty, administration and visitors who are widely dispersed across a large campus quickly about an emergency is a tremendous undertaking," said Jacob Goodwin, GSN's editor-in-chief.

BruinAlert had already been used multiple times to alert the campus population about potentially dangerous situations, including the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that impacted Los Angeles in July 2008 and a wildfire near the UCLA campus in October 2008.

"UCLA became one of the first major American universities to deploy 3rd generation mass notification technology that leverages the IP network to create an effective and unified mass notification system that fully integrates all campus communications resources," said Ly Tran, co-founder and vice president of AtHoc. "This innovative approach to emergency alerting quickly and efficiently delivers alerts during an emergency through multiple, redundant communications devices in a matter of minutes. We applaud UCLA for taking the safety of securing people and property seriously within state government security programs, and we're excited to be the core technology of this award-winning system."

The GSN Homeland Security Awards honor dedicated government officials at federal, state and local levels who have created and executed effective security programs across the country, along with leading IT and physical security vendors who have researched, developed and supplied innovative security solutions during the past year.
