Sponda Plc Press release 13 November 2009, 9:00 a.m. Energy-efficient S-market and ABC service station being built in Turku Property investment company Sponda is building for the Turku Cooperative Society (TOK) an energy-efficient S-market store and ABC service station in Koulukatu street in Turku. Construction began in spring 2009 and the completion date is in spring 2010. The topping out ceremony is being held on Friday, 13 November 2009. The new ABC service station will house a restaurant, a small ABC supermarket and a fuelling station. The service station will have a total floor area of some 1,000 square metres, and the S-market store in the same building will have about 2,000 square metres. A main objective for the design of the building has been to reduce energy consumption during the operating life of the building. The goal is to build a retail building where energy consumption can be cut by as much as 25 % compared to other ABC service stations. Energy-efficient heating systems, building service systems and increasing the thermal insulation are some of the means used to reach this goal. Heating energy from City of Turku's district heating network A study was made in the early design stages of the various options available for heating, and this showed that district heating would be the most efficient with the smallest environmental load. Heating for the building, which is being erected in the City of Turku's town planning zone, utilizes district heating from Turku Energia that is produced as a by-product in electricity generation and in the local refuse incinerators. Technical solutions are being used to reduce the building's energy consumption. The most important of these are utilizing the waste heat from refrigeration equipment in heating the building, and using refrigeration equipment with doors, more effective heat recovery solutions, and air heat pumps in the heating and cooling of the restaurant. One exceptional feature is the heat recovery from the kitchen exhaust using a liquid circulation heat recovery system based on needle jet technology. Also solar panels are used for the hot water supply in the building. The building complies with the stricter regulations for thermal insulation that come into force in 2010, which raise the thermal insulation requirements for buildings by as much as 30 - 40 %. Increasing the thickness of the insulation in the walls and using thermally efficient windows significantly cuts the waste heat from the service station. Measures to save energy are shown in the energy performance certificate Using the design solutions mentioned above has raised the property to energy efficiency category B (on the scale: A - G). The factors used to calculate the energy efficiency are the heating energy consumption of the property, its electricity consumption, cooling energy and water consumption, and the efficiency of the ventilation system.
