Excel gives way to a small application

- HiQ helps Telia Denmark to improve its resource planning

IT consultancy HiQ has assisted Telia Denmark with developing an application
that not only saves time, but also makes planning smoother.

For the coming eighteen months a major network upgrade will be underway at the
heart of Telia's Danish network. The project has to take place over a long
period to ensure that customers are not adversely affected by the changes, which
is why the thousands of virtual connections on the central switches can only be
transferred at night. In the past Telia used Excel spreadsheets to manage minor
replacements, but such spreadsheets are not adequate for the complexities of an
upgrade such as this.

HiQ therefore developed an application that assists with planning, overviews and
statistics - so that the technicians can maintain an overview at all times of
the best order in which to carry out the upgrade work.

“The application provides us with a better overview of how things are
progressing and makes it easier to plan the work. We also anticipate that the
new application will save us valuable working hours," says Lars Balck Jensen,
Director of Infrastructure at Telia's Danish network division.

“This small application clearly shows that there are efficiencies and savings to
be made, even by developing small programs. Software development does not have
to involve projects lasting for years. We have noticed increasing demand for
this type of application, and Silverlight is the ideal platform for developing
them,” says Jon Carvell, who heads HiQ Öresund.

HiQ and Telia Denmark have chosen to develop the solution as a Silverlight 3 RIA
(Rich Internet Application), which is Microsoft's latest web technology.
