"John brings years of experience in all facets of the document and content
management history. His extensive knowledge of this industry is second to
none and he will be a welcome addition to our board. I look forward to
John's participation and counsel," states AIIM President, John Mancini.
John Newton is considered by many to be the father of enterprise content
management, credited with inventing many concepts and technologies now used
industry-wide. In 1990, John co-founded Documentum, the leader in content
management that was eventually acquired by EMC. In 2005, John drove the
development of the Alfresco open source alternative to proprietary ECM.
Since its inception, Alfresco has built a base of more than 800 enterprise
customers, partnered with more than 270 SI and OEM companies, surpassed the
two million downloads mark and recently became the first open source
software to obtain
U.S. Department of Defense 5015.02 records management
certification.
John has also played a key role in the adoption of the Content Management
Interoperability Specification (CMIS), a standard aimed at delivering a
common REST or Web Services API that can be used to develop write-once,
run-anywhere, next generation content and social applications. A member of
the OASIS Technical Committee developing the specification, John has taken
Alfresco to the forefront of CMIS development with the inclusion of
CMIS version 1.0 in Alfresco Community 3.2, the first implementation
for public review. The company also recently held the first CMIS 1.0
virtual training session.
On the 2010 AIIM Board, John is joined by several industry heavyweights:
-- Tricia Bush, Director, SharePoint Enterprise, Microsoft;
-- Brent Bussell, FileNet/IBM Enterprise Content Management, IBM;
-- Timothy Elmore, CIO, Bank-Fund Staff Federal Credit Union;
-- Jeetu Patel, Executive Vice President, Doculabs; and
-- Dr. Johannes Scholtes, President & CEO, ZyLAB Technologies.
"AIIM is an extremely valued resource for the ECM industry and I am honored
to be named to the organization's Board of Directors," said Newton. "This
appointment marks a high-point in my career. I look forward to
collaborating with this impressive group of executives to develop new
avenues for education and research in the ECM space."
