KEMA Advances Insight Into Next-Generation Energy Management Systems

John McDaniel Joins Firm's Power System Operations and Control Practice

BURLINGTON, MA--(Marketwire - February 18, 2010) -  KEMA (www.kema.com) continues to grow its position in the smart grid-enabled utility power system operation and control consulting market as electric utility software and control system expert John McDaniel joins the firm. McDaniel has joined KEMA as a Director in the Power System Operation and Control practice, helping to further the firm's strengths in energy and distribution management system (EMS / DMS) and cyber security and contributing to KEMA's continued strong growth as a smart grid solutions and services provider.

"The needs of our electric grid are changing as smart grid, renewables and other new energy technologies proliferate and come on-line," said Joe Moran, Senior Vice President, Power System Operation and Control consulting, KEMA, Inc. "As we transition to bi-directional electric grids, utilities need more intelligence to manage their T&D system operations to reliability, performance and security goals and standards -- intelligence gained through an effective EMS / DMS-enabled integrated view of the grid."

With over 24 years' experience in the electric utility industry, McDaniel offers KEMA clients expertise in customer and supplier relationship development, business strategy, system sales, contract development, and electric utility control center systems. McDaniel has worked on EMS / DMS projects worldwide, and is recognized for his insight and expertise in the various practices and approaches to electric grid configuration and in the impact of cyber security on EMS / DMS.

"Smarter grids, more distributed generation, more demand response, and greater capacity of intermittent generation on the grid means a major change in the way transmission and distribution operators manage the system," continued Moran. "KEMA understands the implications for T&D system operations. John's experience in SCADA, EMS and DMS system architecture and in building long-term, effective utility-vendor relationships helps further KEMA's long-standing position as an unbiased solutions partner -- helping our utility clients understand and implement the next generation in EMS and DMS technologies and solutions that best meet their system needs, maintain their system reliability and security, and optimize revenue and manage maintenance costs."

Prior to joining KEMA in January 2010, McDaniel was the vice president of strategic partnerships and global service for the Network Management business unit of ABB. He also served in various leadership roles in software, system and network development and engineering with ABB and Texas Instruments and holds a BSEE from Case Western Reserve University and is finishing an MBA from University of Houston.

KEMA is helping utilities and system operators worldwide develop, define, deploy and harvest value from power system operations and control investments and emerging smart grid technologies, systems and initiatives. KEMA's multi-disciplinary experts in utility planning, operations, system integration, and customer research help clients leverage a proven roadmap approach to automation and smart grid initiatives.
