Australia's Redlands Independent School Selects Enterasys to Provide IT Backbone for Student Laptop Program

Centralized, Scalable Infrastructure Allows Small IT Staff to Manage Access to Data, Enables Wireless for Faculty and Students

ANDOVER, MA--(Marketwire - February 22, 2010) -   Enterasys, the network infrastructure and security division of Siemens Enterprise Communications Group, today announced that Redlands, a P-12 independent school in New South Wales, Australia, has deployed Enterasys solutions to provide fixed and wireless IT infrastructure for its 1,700 students across its two large campuses. Through Enterasys solutions and support, Redlands' IT staff of four maintains complete control and visibility of more than 1,200 networked devices, and now has the platform to support a new initiative of adding 386 student laptops, partially funded by the Federal Government One to One Laptop Policy.

"A complete upgrade of our equipment was necessary to ensure the secure delivery of the programs and applications our curriculum demands, particularly the wireless component," said Christian Sellies, Director of ICT for Redlands. "Our school was awarded a grant as part of a federal program that will put 298 new laptop computers into the hands of our Secondary students. These will complement the substantial amount of laptops currently in use by the students throughout the School."

Sellies and his team selected Enterasys based on the ability to work directly with the company rather than through a third-party reseller.

"One of the major challenges we wanted to solve was to look beyond just the short-term benefits of a network upgrade and consider the future technological requirements of our learning environment over the next seven to ten years," Sellies said. "The Enterasys network addresses both our immediate need for secure, easily managed wired and wireless connectivity, and our future considerations for any potential services we want to add such as VoIP, networked security monitoring devices or Video on Demand."

Redlands' Enterasys network is designed to enable more cost-effective data collaboration between departments and support for education-critical applications, as well as Internet connectivity for staff and students. Enterasys N-Series switches serve as the network's core, while Enterasys RoamAbout© wireless access points and controllers enable seamless connectivity from anywhere on campus. Both fixed and convergence components are easily managed thanks to the integrated Enterasys Network Management Suite (NMS), which is designed to deliver pinpoint visibility and control to the centralized operations team through student/staff/guest role-based policies.

"The success of this deployment has been endorsed by both our school board and the parents of our students," Sellies concluded. "I am happy to recommend Enterasys to other schools that are considering similar infrastructure upgrades. The support and service we've received has been sensational. They are always there when we need them."
