Apigee Gains Hundreds of Users, Touts New Features, Powers Innovative Apps That Rely on Twitter, Facebook, Google and Other APIs

SANTA CLARA, CA--(Marketwire - February 24, 2010) - Apigee, a free, self-service API management tool for Web APIs like Twitter, Facebook and Google, has gained hundreds of registered users, added robust functionality since its launch in August 2009 and is poised to gather never-before-seen insight into the state of API usage across Web and mobile platforms.

Built on Sonoa's industrial-strength cloud service and API infrastructure that powers MTV Networks and MySpace, among others, Apigee now features a revamped Web interface, animated API setup and rate limiting dialogues. These features allow users to easily get started on Apigee.com, view detailed analytics on API requests over time and determine automatic responses to changes that can disrupt service. Apigee has also added SSL support for APIs based on HTTPS protocols, opening up prominent APIs, including PayPal, to safe, efficient usage and deep visibility.

"APIs are changing the face of Web and mobile for both big companies and individual developers alike, and Apigee is proving to be an ideal platform to create some pretty innovative apps and mashups," says Brian Mulloy, co-creator of Apigee. "Additionally, with more and more users adopting Apigee, we have the potential to find out what that change looks like -- how fast it's growing, what platforms are being used, and what access and usage trends are developing -- empowering our users to be smarter about managing and running their apps in today's Web API economy."

Apigee provides insight into the emergence of new application trends, with the most popular applications revolving around location-based functionality, as well as a growing social media mashup trend. Popular examples of applications currently using Apigee include:

-- mLocal: Allows users to easily access local online classified ads;

-- Social Mention: Providing indicators of social sentiment as captured across popular social networking platforms;

-- Flickr Photosets: Built using the Flickr and Facebook APIs proxied through Apigee, it is the fastest and most intuitive Flickr app on Facebook, enabling users to view and share comments.

The latter is an impressive example of how community can make an application better -- with both open source code available for any Facebook developer and a rich community discussion forum for users to suggest improvements. To date, Apigee shows an essentially equal distribution of usage between providers, consumers and developers of APIs, a strong indicator of a healthy and growing API ecosystem.
