Lake Land College Selects Enterasys Over Cisco and HP for Fixed/Wireless Upgrade

New Network Delivers Automated Virtualization Support and Always-On Secure Connectivity With Superior Service

ANDOVER, MA--(Marketwire - March 8, 2010) -  Enterasys, the network infrastructure and security division of Siemens Enterprise Communications Group, today announced that Lake Land College of Illinois has deployed Enterasys solutions to provide fixed and wireless IT infrastructure for its 7,400 students and 600 staff across its main campus and four satellite locations. Through Enterasys solutions and support, Lake Land's IT staff of five has realized its goal of implementing multimedia technology in all 120 classrooms, and can easily manage day-to-day network activity while achieving comprehensive network visibility and protection.

"As it came time to replace existing end-of-life equipment, we evaluated the leading network infrastructure vendors, including comparable solutions from Cisco, HP, Foundry and Extreme, but we always found ourselves coming back to Enterasys," said Lee Spaniol, director of Information Systems and Services at Lake Land College. "The automation and security features that come standard with Enterasys equipment were important factors in our decision, as we plan on future growth to support curriculum expansion. With Enterasys, we can add more layers of management with fewer resources."

Spaniol and his team also considered Enterasys' standards-based design approach as well as support for a VMware environment, reliability, scalability, security, overall cost and interoperability with its existing VoIP solution.

"Lake Land College now has a widely-used wireless campus network using the HiPath Wireless access points and controllers," said Bill Warfel, chief network administrator at Lake Land College. "We also just completed construction on a 51,000 square-foot addition, where the technology education division is housed. They teach everything from CAD to 3D modeling to GPS-based survey and agricultural technology, requiring large amounts of network bandwidth. Enterasys N-Series switches give my small staff the ability to dynamically prioritize bandwidth availability using flow-based technology."

Lake Land College's Enterasys network is designed to enable more cost-effective data collaboration between departments and support for education-critical applications such as Blackboard, as well as Internet connectivity for full-time and part-time students, including distance learners who connect remotely using role-based access.

"We rely heavily on the automation features of the NMS management software, which has helped us free up considerable time and resources so we can now focus on the next phase of network expansion," Spaniol said. "We are confident that the new Enterasys network will allow us to continue to scale to support any new technology initiatives that are coming in the future."
