ACWA Applauds Focus of Latest California Water Plan

Key State Plan Recognizes Challenges, Urgent Need for Solutions

SACRAMENTO, CA--(Marketwire - April 1, 2010) - Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) Executive Director Timothy Quinn issued the following statement today on the California Water Plan Update 2009 released by the Department of Water Resources. The plan, required by law and published at five-year intervals, identifies significant challenges facing the state's water system and lays out strategies for more sustainable and integrated water management.

"We commend DWR for emphasizing the extreme challenges confronting our state's water system, from aging infrastructure to climate change to regulatory restrictions on water deliveries to much of the state. As the California Water Plan clearly articulates, our system has lost its resilience even as our population continues to grow and our environment and economy need more reliable supplies.

"We support the plan's call for immediate action on an integrated, comprehensive set of solutions that includes regional water management, improved water conveyance and other infrastructure investments and a commitment to improved data and information management to support decision making.

"Building on the historic legislative package enacted in November 2009, these strategies reflect the direction we must take to put California on a path to a sustainable water system that will meet our needs."

ACWA is a statewide association of public agencies whose 450 members are responsible for about 90% of the water delivered in California. For more information, visit www.acwa.com.
