Unmanaged Client Software Compromises Endpoint Security, Warns Promisec

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - April 26, 2010) -  The market growth and increased reliance on security agents recently reported by Infonetics ("Security client software market up in a down year") raises a red flag for organizations, warns clientless endpoint management software vendor, Promisec. The company cited its own study of approximately 100,000 endpoints over 25 organizations, showing that organizations suffer from 10% to 30% of security breaches or non-compliance on endpoints in the networks. The top issues found by Promisec were all related to poor management of agents including missing Microsoft updates, antivirus protection deficiencies, missing host-intrusion prevention systems (HIPS), missing or misconfigured encryption agents, and application delivery agents.

"Agent-based security solutions are absolutely essential for protecting endpoints in what Infonetics calls an 'incredibly hostile threat environment,'" stated Roni Suchowski, CTO of Promisec. "The question is one of management -- how do organizations ensure they have consistently deployed and maintained all of those agents?"

Promisec's own study, in which no organization showed a clean bill of health, found more than 20% of endpoints were unmanaged -- suffering from missing or misconfigured security clients.

"Simple actions, such as changing configuration settings, can prevent users from having full protection. A user might see the computer is running slowly and shut down a few processes, including patch management or antivirus. None of this is malicious, but it creates security holes," adds Suchowski. "Our studies consistently show that organizations cannot cover 100% of the endpoints without an independent, clientless umbrella to manage the agents."

Promisec asserts that only a clientless solution can provide 100% visibility into endpoints, as well as automated and manual remediation of security holes.
