Compuware-Sponsored Survey Reveals That Business Leaders Need Greater End-to-End Service Visibility From IT

Survey Shows Growing Dependence on Internet for Business Success, Doubts Over IT Readiness to Address Emerging Concerns; Compuware to Present Webcast on Results

DETROIT, May 10, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Compuware Corporation (Nasdaq:CPWR) today announced the findings of a commissioned global survey conducted by IDC on Compuware's behalf. The survey examines how global businesses use the Internet today and how service quality for applications delivered over the Web impacts the ability to conduct business effectively.

The study, titled: "Optimizing the Performance of Web-based Business Services: A Global Survey of Business Priorities," found that as the Internet transforms the way businesses operate, it's forcing business leaders to be more aware of the performance and availability of their Internet-enabled business activities. The survey also showed that IT often fails to provide business leaders the real-time visibility into the health, performance and business impact of these borderless applications needed to make rapid decisions about staffing, customer support and problem resolution. Further, business decision makers are looking for help from IT, but they are unsure how well prepared IT is to address these emerging concerns.

Compuware will host a live webcast with IDC to discuss the survey results and provide actionable guidance to help IT overcome these challenges on Thursday, May 13, at 11 a.m. Eastern time. Register here: http://bit.ly/cx1grP.

The study surveyed 474 business and IT decision makers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Brazil. Key findings include:

  • The majority of organizations currently use the Internet to enable marketing/advertising, recruiting/hiring, customer support, employee HR, salesforce/CRM, collaboration and online billing activities. By 2012, respondents expect to make even greater use of the Internet to drive revenues.

  • Business decision makers want information about end-to-end business service performance across the Internet and the data center, but only 36 percent frequently review performance and availability reports. In many cases, decision makers do not review reports because they are too complicated or do not provide sufficient business context.

  • By 2012, 78 percent of decision makers expect their organizations will make extensive use of smart phones to access Internet-based business activities.

  • Only 31 percent of decision makers believe their IT organization is very well equipped to help business leaders understand the impacts, risks and opportunities related to their organization's rising use of the Internet and smart phones.

  • Delivery of better, real-time insight into the end-to-end performance of Internet-enabled business activities is the most frequently mentioned IT priority for the next two years.

"As the use of the Internet to enable critical business activities increases, business decision makers need better insight and data about the performance, availability and health of those services," said Mary Johnston Turner, Research Director at IDC. "The survey results clearly indicate that business decision makers are counting on their IT counterparts to provide them business context as well as end-to-end performance data. CIOs and IT performance monitoring teams must invest in the tools and processes needed to capture real-time end-to-end visibility across the data center and the Internet, and to provide the business impact and context needed by business decision makers."

Methodology

Compuware commissioned IDC to design a global web-based survey that targeted business decision makers representing a wide range of industries and countries. Survey fieldwork occurred in April 2010. The survey sample included 474 decision makers from the U.S./Canada, the UK, Germany, France and Brazil. These countries were targeted due to the availability of mature Internet infrastructure. Although there was some variability from country to country, the major conclusions reported in this white paper were consistent across the countries surveyed.

Survey participants were required to have either high or moderate levels of knowledge about how their organization uses the Internet to enable business applications, activities and processes. The majority (96 percent) of participating organizations had more than 1,000 employees. Almost three-quarters (73 percent) of participants reported their role as line of business C-level, Vice President, Director or Manager.

IDC conducted in-depth follow-up telephone interviews with a small number of participants to validate answers and develop a more in-depth understanding of their responses. Participants were also provided the opportunity to provide open-ended comments, which provided additional insight.
