ANDOVER, MA--(Marketwire - May 17, 2010) - Enterasys, the network infrastructure and security division of Siemens Enterprise Communications GmbH & Co KG, today announced that the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), an international center for research, education and training in biology, biomedicine and ecology, has overhauled their 13-building IT infrastructure with Enterasys solutions to better secure the communications of its 1,200 users. Utilizing Enterasys C-Series and N-Series switches, along with the Enterasys Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) and NMS Policy Manager, MBL is now better prepared to stop the spread of malware, viruses and other IT security threats that reduce network access and slow user productivity.

"Prior to our Enterasys solution, it wasn't unusual to lose five hours across five staff members hunting for infected machines and trying to remove them from the network for cleanup after a single virus outbreak," said Robert Loyot, director of IT for the Marine Biological Laboratory. "Due to the large and constantly rotating number of Students, Scientists and Conference attendees, the MBL's network is as vulnerable to inside threats as outside threats. With so many transient stakeholders touching our network, we needed a role-based security solution that would prevent these users from bringing all their problems into our infrastructure."

Loyot and his staff of seven also required an integrated management solution that would free up resources previously used on troubleshooting network problems. "With Enterasys NMS and IPS, we now have a dynamic network that gathers evidence of an attacker's activity, restricts the attacker's access, and reconfigures to stop any harm to our network," Loyot said. "This simplicity of management through role-based authentication saves my team hours of administration time."

Additionally, Enterasys helped MBL create an off-campus WLAN to solve a connectivity challenge for its summer housing, a location that had proven to be geographically difficult to network.

"We have 75 cottages where our summer residents stay. Due to the geographic location of these buildings and the highly transient population using them, they were poorly served by traditional telephony and cable based data systems," Loyot said. "The Enterasys network now powers a secure WLAN that supports voice and data for those residents. Enterasys QoS automatically prioritizes voice traffic, while the NMS Policy Manager grants role-based wireless access."

Moving forward, Loyot and his team plan to redirect the hours and resources saved with the Enterasys network toward new initiatives, including a server virtualization project. "Assigning resources to the day-to-day management of the network has become easier with Enterasys. The team now has time to focus on optimization projects that would not have been possible before. Things run much better now than they ever did, thanks to Enterasys," concluded Loyot.
