Adobe Publishes Puppet Modules for Managing Hadoop

Puppet Code to Manage and Automate Hadoop Deployments Now Available as Free Download on Puppet Forge

PORTLAND, OR--(Marketwire - June 24, 2010) - Puppet Labs, commercial sponsor of the open source server configuration framework Puppet, today announced that Adobe Systems Incorporated has agreed to publish their Puppet modules for managing Hadoop -- an open source platform for consolidating, combining and understanding data -- in the Puppet Forge. This Puppet code will be freely available for download.

"We are excited that Adobe uses Puppet to manage cutting-edge technologies like Hadoop as well as their standard infrastructure," said Luke Kanies, founder and CEO of Puppet Labs and creator of Puppet. "We're pleased with Adobe's commitment to the project and that they see the value of sharing their work with the rest of the Puppet community."

Puppet is an open source data center automation and configuration management framework that provides system administrators with a simplified platform that allows for consistent, transparent, and flexible systems management. Puppet Forge is the place to find and share Puppet modules -- reusable, sharable units of Puppet code.

"Puppet takes care of our heavy lifting in managing Hadoop -- it figures out what nodes need to be upgraded, pushes the new archives, changes configuration files and restarts services," said Cristian Ivascu, computer scientist at Adobe. "Follow a few simple steps, go for a coffee and when you come back the cluster is running the new version."

"Organizations are deploying Hadoop at an unprecedented rate in an ever broader range of use cases," said Charles Zedlewski, Sr. Director of Product Management at Cloudera. "As companies move Hadoop into more production situations they are increasingly focused on the ease of management and administration. Puppet represents a good complement to Cloudera's enterprise software and support for the Hadoop platform."

With more than 60 customers and thousands of users including Digg, Genentech, Match.com, NYU, Oracle and Sun, Shopzilla, Stanford University, SugarCRM and Twitter, Puppet is the go-to framework systems administrators choose for configuration management. Organizations are increasingly taking advantage of Puppet's support of a variety of operating systems: Red Hat, CentOS, Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, SuSE, Solaris, BSD, and OS X.
