PowerSouth Energy Cooperative Builds a Better Backbone With Exalt

Microwave Backhaul Systems Deliver High Performance, Traffic Flexibility and Scalable Capacity

CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwire - July 13, 2010) -  Exalt Communications, the company that is reinventing microwave backhaul, today announced that PowerSouth Energy Cooperative (PowerSouth), an electrical generation and transmission cooperative that provides wholesale power to 20 distribution members in Alabama and northwest Florida, has deployed Exalt microwave backhaul systems to deliver T1 and Ethernet traffic capabilities throughout its network.

A believer in microwave transmission since 1973, PowerSouth has seen an increase in applications and Ethernet traffic loads in recent years among its members. In addition to SCADA data for utility equipment monitoring and control, the network also carries voice, corporate e-mail, file sharing, and other data traffic. When its legacy T1-based systems lacked the flexibility to support Ethernet migration, as well as the capacity to support future applications and SmartGrid initiatives, the Cooperative turned to Exalt.

"We needed higher capacity and a solution that can deliver native Ethernet as well as native T1, and Exalt had the right systems at the right price," said Chad Jenkins, principal engineer at PowerSouth. "Now we can, and do, use every traffic mix as location needs dictate, whether it's all T1, all Ethernet, or a mixture of the two, and the systems have been extremely reliable despite severe weather conditions at times."

The PowerSouth microwave network connects substations, voice repeaters, and local utility offices over hops that range up to 25 miles. The Exalt systems' native Ethernet and native T1 capabilities are allowing the Cooperative to migrate away from Ethernet-over-T1 links to improve network performance and scalability.

"Moving networks toward the future requires the flexibility to support legacy services and new services concurrently," said Amir Zoufonoun, president and CEO of Exalt Communications. "By supporting both native TDM and native Ethernet in every Exalt microwave backhaul system, we make it much easier and more cost-effective for utilities like PowerSouth to transition to SmartGrid-capable networks. Moreover, because Exalt systems operate in the harshest and most challenging environments and are available in multiple physical configurations, they meet the needs of any type of deployment."

The Exalt Microwave Backhaul Product Portfolio
All Exalt microwave backhaul systems -- indoor, outdoor, and split-mount -- offer guaranteed link availability, guaranteed throughput and low, constant latency. Systems are available in world bands from 2 to 40 GHz and in capacities from 10 Mbps to more than 1000 Mbps per channel, providing a range of options to fit countless network applications. Designed to enable a smooth transition to IP, they offer native support for both TDM and Ethernet, and are fully software configurable and upgradeable. For easy and secure management using third-party network management systems, Exalt systems support SNMP v1, v2c and v3. Data security is provided by available FIPS 197-compliant AES 128-bit and 256-bit encryption that adds zero latency to the transmission. To simplify installation and maintenance, all Exalt systems feature an embedded manual and most include a built-in spectrum analyzer.
