Warner Bros. Pictures Reunites "The Dark Knight" Director with IMAX for His Next Big Movie
Multiple Oscar Nominee Leonardo DiCaprio Returns to IMAX Screens
LOS ANGELES, July 16, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- IMAX Corporation (Nasdaq:IMAX) (TSX:IMX), Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures today announced that Inception, directed by Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight") and starring multiple Oscar® nominee Leonardo DiCaprio ("Blood Diamond," "The Aviator"), opens on a record 197 IMAX screens simultaneously with the film's domestic wide release in conventional theatres on July 16, 2010. Inception also opens day-and-date on 22 IMAX screens internationally starting on July 15 and 44 additional IMAX screens internationally in the following weeks. The film marks the third IMAX project for Christopher Nolan, following the record-breaking IMAX release of "The Dark Knight," which grossed more that $65 million at IMAX theatres. Inception, a contemporary sci-fi action film set within the architecture of the mind, has been digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with IMAX DMR® technology.
The film also stars Oscar® nominee Ellen Page ("Juno"), Oscar® nominee Ken Watanabe ("The Last Samurai"), Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard ("La vie en rose"), Joseph Gordon-Levitt ("500 Days of Summer"), Tom Hardy ("RocknRolla"), Cillian Murphy ("Batman Begins"), Oscar® nominee Tom Berenger ("Platoon") and Academy Award® winner Michael Caine ("The Cider House Rules").
"Inception is a film that asks the audience to come on a journey into the human mind – its going to be an incredibly immersive experience, and in IMAX, they are going to get the best version of that," said director Christopher Nolan. "We have done all kinds of things to re-format the film for The IMAX Experience, and as a result, you get enhanced clarity, sound and a closer relationship with the action. I think IMAX is going to be a really amazing way to see Inception."
"Chris Nolan and IMAX have once again proven to be ideally suited to each other and we're very excited to share this incredible pairing of creative vision and technology with audiences starting this Friday," said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Pictures' president of domestic distribution. "The number of IMAX screens has more than doubled since the release of 'The Dark Knight,' enabling more IMAX fans to experience Inception in this exceptional format."
"Chris Nolan has created a film with limitless vision and the kind of rich detail that springs to life on the IMAX screen," said Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, President, Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures International. "As the number of IMAX screens around the world continues to grow, so does the demand for this enhanced movie-going experience, and we're thrilled to supply films like Inception for the IMAX format."
"We're very excited to share this highly anticipated and wildly creative film with IMAX audiences and Christopher Nolan fans, which are increasingly becoming synonymous with one another," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "Chris Nolan's unique vision combined with the talents of Leonardo DiCaprio and the rest of the cast creates the kind of cinematic event that we believe will resonate very well with IMAX moviegoers."
"With a visionary director that knows and understands the power of the IMAX medium, a talented cast lead by a superstar actor and an innovative studio that knows how to communicate the IMAX brand to audiences worldwide, this film has all the key ingredients for an anchor 2010 IMAX release," added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "We're so excited with Chris Nolan's return to the IMAX format and look forward to sharing this incredible film with our growing audience worldwide."
Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan directs an international cast in "Inception," an original sci-fi actioner that travels around the globe and into the intimate and infinite world of dreams. This summer, your mind is the scene of the crime.
Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Legendary Pictures, a Syncopy Production, a film by Christopher Nolan, "Inception." The film was written and directed by Oscar® nominee Christopher Nolan ("Memento," "The Dark Knight"), who also produced the film with Emma Thomas. Chris Brigham and Thomas Tull served as executive producers, with Jordan Goldberg co-producing.
Inception The IMAX Experience is scheduled to play day-and-date at the following IMAX® Theatres beginning July 16th.
