SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - August 17, 2010) - The Excellence in Investing for Children's Causes Foundation and the Ira Sohn Research Conference Foundation today announced the speakers for the 1st Annual Excellence in Investing: San Francisco, a financial conference to take place October 6 from 2:30 - 6:00 pm at San Francisco's Herbst Theatre, part of the San Francisco War Memorial & Performing Arts Center. The Excellence in Investing for Children's Causes Foundation is also partnering with The Guardsmen, an all-volunteer group of Bay Area men that aims to enrich the lives of at-risk local youth, in its sponsorship of the conference.

Inspired by and patterned after the celebrated Ira Sohn Investment Research Conference, held annually in New York, the Excellence in Investing: San Francisco conference will provide portfolio managers, asset allocators and private investors an invaluable opportunity to hear stock perspectives and market predictions from some of the world's elite financial voices. In addition to top investors, the San Francisco event's lineup will also include venture capitalists, academics and other prominent thinkers from Wall Street to Silicon Valley.

A special component of the conference will be the auction of a rare first edition of Benjamin Graham's value investing classic "The Intelligent Investor," signed by Warren Buffett. All proceeds raised from the auction and from the event will benefit education and other children's causes, with the primary beneficiaries to include Leadership Public Schools, which prepares children from low-income, urban neighborhoods in the San Francisco Bay Area to thrive in college and assist their communities. A portion of the event's proceeds will also be donated to those organizations that combat pediatric cancer supported by the Ira Sohn Research Conference Foundation, which to date has raised approximately $20 million for those causes.

The speaker lineup for the 1st Annual Excellence in Investing Conference in San Francisco is:

  • John H. Burbank III, Passport Capital LLC
  • Christopher Chabris, author, "The Invisible Gorilla"

The Ira Sohn Investment Research Conference in New York has included notable presentations by such investors as Bill Ackman, who predicted the rise of General Growth Properties Inc., David Einhorn, who presciently forecasted the downfall of Lehman Brothers, and Sam Zell, who anticipated the collapse of the Internet bubble. This spring's conference, held May 26, took place before a sold-out audience of nearly 1,500 people and raised about $3 million for pediatric cancer charities.

"The investment insights and charitable efforts of the Ira Sohn Conference have long been an exemplary model for all financial conferences," said Patrick Wolff, principal and co-founder of the Excellence in Investing for Children's Causes Foundation. "We're extremely pleased to bring this tremendous event to the West Coast and to provide a forum for the eclectic and insightful perspectives our speakers will surely share."

"We're honored to support such a worthy cause as children's education and to partner with the Ira Sohn Research Conference Foundation and The Guardsmen," added Jack Selby, principal and co-founder of the Excellence in Investing for Children's Causes Foundation. "We hope this inaugural event will launch a successful and enduring tradition."
