SNIA's Green Storage Initiative Releases Updated Draft Storage Power Efficiency Measurement Specification

Second Release Adds Active Metrics and Capacity Optimization Techniques to Further Characterize Storage Efficiency

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - September 27, 2010) -  The Storage Networking Industry Association's (SNIA) Green Storage Initiative (GSI) today announced that it has publicly released the second draft Storage Power Efficiency Measurement Specification. The Storage Power Efficiency Measurement Specification is the follow-on draft of the SNIA Green Storage Power Measurement Technical Specification released in January 2009.

This draft adds active power measurement to the specification. For online storage there are six additional metrics -- the traditional "four corners" tests for random and sequential read and write workloads -- plus two mixed workloads. For removable media there are two streaming workload tests.

The specification also adds five software-based capacity optimization techniques -- delta snapshots, thin provisioning, data deduplication, advanced RAID and compression -- to help vendors to demonstrate which methods they are capable of supporting.

The latest draft version (v0.2.10) of the Green Storage Power Efficiency Measurement Specification is now available for public review at http://www.snia.org/publicreview/.

About the Green Storage Initiative

SNIA's Green Storage Initiative (GSI) is dedicated to advancing energy efficiency and conservation in all networked storage technologies in an effort to minimize the environmental impact of data storage operations. SNIA's Green Storage activities take place in two separate working bodies, the Green Storage Initiative Technical Working Group (GSI TWG) and the Green Storage Initiative. The GSI TWG is focused on developing test metrics by which energy consumption and efficiency can be measured. The Green Storage Initiative is focused on creating and publicizing best practices for energy efficient storage networking, educating the vendor and user community, and promoting storage-centric applications that reduce storage footprint and associated power requirements.
