Universal Announces Volcanic Ash Extended Forecast as Value Add to Clients

Model Provides Forecast Days Out, Helping Operators Avoid Delays and Cancellations

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwire - October 18, 2010) - Universal Weather and Aviation, Inc. announced that it is now providing its clients volcanic ash forecasting well beyond the standard 18-hour window currently used by ash advisory centers. The ash extended forecast is a value-added service and a standard component of Universal's trip support services package.

"Following last spring's volcanic eruptions, we set out to find a forecasting model that would provide our clients with a solution that would help them proactively plan to avoid delays and cancellations as a result of an ash cloud," said Jim Reed, Director, Weather and Flight Planning. "We can now provide an objective forecast several days beyond the ash event, allowing us to advise our clients on preparations for Plan B if it appears their operation will be impacted."

Universal's volcanic ash forecasting model is based on proven scientific data and has been verified by the leading scientists and volcanologists in the industry. The model is based on physics to determine the path of ash pollution and dispersion.

"The model we are using has undergone great verification within the scientific community," said Shawn Rampy, Product Manager, Weather and Mobile Solutions. "We understand the pain grounded and redirected flights created for operators last year. Volcanoes are erupting around the globe on a regular basis. Fortunately, most don't impact aviation. However, there's no way to predict when another event like what occurred in Iceland last year will happen again. But when it does, we will be able to proactively assist our clients in making alternative plans thanks to this forecasting capability."
