Statewide Association Marks Centennial With New History Book

ACWA Volume Chronicles Events, Personalities in California Water

INDIAN WELLS, CA--(Marketwire - December 1, 2010) - The Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) today unveiled a 104-page, hardbound book commemorating the association's 100-year history as an advocate for public water agencies and a leading voice on California water issues.

The book, titled "A Century of Leadership; Vision for the Future," traces the journey from the association's founding in 1910 to today, layering key events in California water history with the debates, challenges and triumphs that shaped ACWA and its leaders over the past century. Photographs, excerpts and personal reflections help tell the story.

ACWA President Paul Kelley called the book a fitting tribute to an association whose history has been closely intertwined with the broader narrative of California water.

"California's story is fundamentally the story of water, and ACWA members have been there at every important turn," Kelley said. "As this book illustrates, the association has been far from static over the past 100 years. Like the public agencies it represents, ACWA has evolved to reflect the needs and priorities of the day. As its core, this is a story of public water agencies and their unwavering commitment to meeting California's water needs."

In addition to providing a unique account of the rise of irrigation districts, severe droughts, floods, policy conflicts and California's golden era of water development, the book highlights numerous local water leaders that emerged over the years to guide the water community.

ACWA's centennial book includes a foreword by Dr. Kevin Starr, state librarian emeritus and professor of history at the University of Southern California.

The book was unveiled during the annual ACWA Fall Conference & Exhibition. Written and designed by ACWA staff, the book is available for purchase at www.acwa.com/catalog.

ACWA is a statewide association of public agencies whose 450 members are responsible for about 90% of the water delivered in California. For more information, visit www.acwa.com.
