To establish an online lead generation awards program that reflected the opinions of the industry, LeadsCouncil based the LEADER awards on votes by lead buyers and lead sellers within the industry. Each organization was allowed two votes. Lead buyers were able to vote for their best lead gen and lead technology partners. Lead sellers were allowed to vote for their best lead technology partners.

LeadsCouncil was created to promote best practices for online lead generation and customer acquisition, develop industry-specific research (based on actual lead data), and foster education and networking in the lead generation industry.

Since its formation last year, LeadsCouncil now has approximately 90 member companies -- evenly divided between lead buyers, lead sellers, and lead technology companies.
