Local Economy Strengthened by Refit of CCGS Pierre Radisson

Canada's Economic Action Plan at Work

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Jan. 24, 2011) - Mr. Bernard Généreux, MP for Montmagny-L'Islet-Kamouraska-Rivière-du-Loup, today announced on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that Verreault Navigation Inc., in Les Méchins, Quebec, will complete significant and substantial upgrades to the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Pierre Radisson.

"Canada's Economic Action Plan is creating jobs and opportunities across the province and country." said Mr. Généreux. "Our Government is pleased that we can rely on the skills and expertise of the workers in Quebec, which is renowned for its shipbuilding expertise, to enable the Coast Guard to maintain a high level of maritime services for Canadians."

The vessel refit project for CCGS Pierre Radisson involves the replacement of the ship's six engines, three main generators and one bow thruster. This medium-class river icebreaker will retain its 11,155 kW of power and its propulsion speed capability. Work is scheduled to be undertaken in the spring of 2011.

Our government is investing $9.5 million refitting the CCGS Pierre Radisson including $2.2 million provided through Canada's Economic Action Plan.

As a part of Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada is investing $175 million in the Canadian Coast Guard to procure 68 new small vessels, 30 environmental barges, and to undertake major repair work on 40 of its largest vessels, including the Pierre Radisson.
