TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 7, 2011) - The Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism), today delivered remarks to the Hotel Association of Canada's 19th Annual Conference. The Minister of State discussed government support for hoteliers as well as future growth opportunities for the entire tourism industry.

"It's no secret that the first impressions of our visitors are shaped by their hotel experiences," said Minister of State Moore. "I'd like to acknowledge the hard-working men and women who staff our hotels from coast to coast to coast, contributing to the memorable moments that make visitors want to return."

In his remarks, the Minister of State highlighted many of the factors that are helping to drive tourism industry momentum. The successful Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the Canadian Tourism Commission's increased efforts in priority markets such as China and Brazil, and the upcoming Federal Tourism Strategy are all positioning Canada for a strong 2011.

"It is time for us to take full advantage of our country's unique strengths and this enormous opportunity," said Minister of State Moore. "By consulting industry associations, labour groups and other levels of government, we are working together to ensure the tourism industry remains a key component of our economic recovery."

The Harper Government is focused on stimulating the growth of the tourism industry and helping to bring Canada to the forefront in the minds of travellers. Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, the government is investing in:

  • the National Trails Coalition;
  • Parks Canada and its National Historic Sites of Canada;
  • the Canadian Tourism Commission for greater domestic and international marketing; and
  • the two-year Marquee Tourism Events Program, which has increased tourism spending and promoted Canada as a premier tourist destination.

Canada's Economic Action Plan also provides funding for key programs that will indirectly benefit tourism, such as upgrades to VIA Rail service and enhancements to local infrastructure.

Tourism makes a significant contribution to Canada's economy, representing 2 percent of gross domestic product and generating approximately 617,000 jobs. It involves all regions, both urban and rural, including Canada's North.
