Correctional Service of Canada: Inmate Assault and Lockdown at Stony Mountain Institution


STONY MOUNTAIN, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - March 8, 2011) - On Monday, March 7, 2011 at approximately 10:20 p.m., two inmates were observed to have visible signs of injury. Staff took immediate action and provided first aid. The inmates were found to have stab wounds and were transported to outside hospital via ambulance. One of the inmates was treated and discharged from the hospital and was returned to the institution. The other inmate remains in hospital under observation. 

The Correctional Service of Canada and the RCMP are investigating the incident. Stony Mountain Institution is locked down to facilitate the investigative process. All visits for inmates have been cancelled until further notice. The lockdown will remain in place until institutional management determines it is safe to resume normal operations.

Stony Mountain Institution is a medium security federal penitentiary located 11 km north of Winnipeg, currently accommodating 606 inmates.
