Correctional Service of Canada: Inmate Fight and Lockdown at Edmonton Institution


EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - March 9, 2011) - At approximately 0930 hours on March 9, 2011, Edmonton Institution was placed on a general lockdown following a fight involving several inmates. The disturbance occurred in the gymnasium and main recreation yard. Correctional Officers responded to the disturbance. In order to gain control of the situation several warning shots were fired.

No staff were injured however several inmates sustained injuries. One inmate was transported to outside hospital as a result of his injuries. He currently remains in hospital for observation purposes. 

The Correctional Service of Canada and Edmonton City Police are investigating the incident. Edmonton Institution remains locked down to facilitate the investigative process. Inmate visits have been cancelled for the duration of the lock down. The institution will return to normal routine when the Warden is satisfied that it is safe to do so. 

Edmonton Institution is a maximum security federal penitentiary currently accommodating 279 inmates.
