SELKIRK, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - March 17, 2011) - The Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism), highlighted the Government of Canada's support for the Manitoba tourism industry at a luncheon held in Selkirk and hosted by the Interlake Tourism Association.

"Our government supports the great potential of Manitoba's tourism industry, which is helping to create jobs," said Minister of State Moore. "The economy remains the top priority of the Government of Canada." 

Known for its inland oceans, Manitoba's Interlake Region is rich in culture, history and natural beauty. Visitors from around the world are drawn to Manitoba for its picturesque scenery and the wide array of activities that can be enjoyed throughout the year, from boating and hunting to snowmobiling and ice fishing.

Our government is working to promote a strong tourism industry so that more visitors can enjoy our country's natural wonders," said James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk–Interlake. "Our government is focussed on supporting the tourism industry and helping it grow and create jobs for Canadians."

The Government of Canada has made a significant investment in tourism through Canada's Economic Action Plan. In addition, Minister of State Moore led a highly successful tourism mission to China in October 2010 to maximize the opportunities presented by Canada's Approved Destination Status. This designation will make it easier for Chinese nationals to visit Canada.

Tourism has a significant impact on Canada's economy overall, representing 2 percent of gross domestic product and generating approximately 617,000 jobs.

The Interlake Tourism Association is a not-for-profit, membership-driven organization that promotes the Interlake Region as a top Manitoba destination.
