Licensing Transactions Partner Richard Hsu Joins King & Spalding in Silicon Valley

REDWOOD SHORES, CA--(Marketwire - March 18, 2011) - King & Spalding announced today that Richard C. Hsu, a corporate lawyer specializing in complex licensing transactions in the technology and life sciences sectors, has joined the firm's Silicon Valley office as a partner. Hsu joins King & Spalding from Kilpatrick Townsend LLP, where he was managing partner of the Palo Alto office and former chair of Townsend LLP's technology transactions practice.

"Richard contributes substantial additional transactional depth and leadership to our office and furthers our growing reputation in the life sciences community," said Timothy T. Scott, managing partner of King & Spalding's Silicon Valley office. "We are thrilled with the addition of Richard's licensing and technology expertise. With his arrival, King & Spalding becomes one of the few law firms in Silicon Valley that provides life-science-focused patent, regulatory, litigation/IP litigation, licensing and transactional legal services in its local office."

Hsu advises companies on corporate, licensing and associated business and intellectual property issues. He has extensive experience in structuring and negotiating corporate and technology transactions, including acquisitions, asset purchase, licensing, development and other partnering agreements for the life science, semiconductor, medical device, electronics and software industries. He also has experience in intellectual property asset management and patent enforcement, having assisted numerous clients to develop and implement strategies to acquire, protect, enforce and commercialize various forms of intellectual property. His clients range from large to smaller, early-stage technology and life sciences companies, primarily based in Silicon Valley or having a substantial presence in the area. Prior to joining his former firm, Hsu was with Venture Law Group and served as general counsel of Cyrano Sciences, Inc., a venture-backed Caltech start-up.

Hsu earned a J.D. degree from Columbia Law School and a B.S. degree in engineering and applied science from the California Institute of Technology.

"I am very excited to join King & Spalding," said Hsu. "The firm has a substantial presence in the life sciences industry -- especially in Silicon Valley -- and I look forward to contributing to the growth of the firm's technology licensing practice and the corporate practice, both in Silicon Valley and beyond."
