GREATER SUDBURY, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 8, 2011) - According to preliminary data released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), four single detached starts were counted in the Greater Sudbury metropolitan area in March 2011. Year-to-date, 15 single detached units have broken ground, fifty per cent weaker than the same period last year.

"Single detached starts recovered in 2010 partly on the strength of an early spring in the Greater Sudbury area," recalled Warren Philp, Northern Ontario Market Analyst with CMHC.
"The March weather this year was not as cooperative as last March and therefore, starts are off for the first quarter. In the year-to-date, there were 15 single-detached units counted compared to 30 for the same period last year," continued Philp.
Elsewhere in Northeastern Ontario, starts are behind in North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie while housing starts in Timmins began the year swiftly compared to last year.
