Luxury Resort Recognized With 2011 Hawaii Green Business Hotel Award


KO OLINA, HI--(Marketwire - Apr 13, 2011) - JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa at Ko Olina has been recognized by the State of Hawaii with a prestigious "Hawaii Green Business Award" for its outstanding efforts in sustainable and environmentally conscience business practice.

Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie presented the award on March 17, 2011, applauding the successful efforts by the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort on Oahu. The oceanfront resort was lauded for its implemented green measures such as lighting retrofits and provision of recycling bins in common areas, as well as its exemplary energy and water conservation practices, pollution prevention, solid waste reduction and recycling efforts.

The JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa -- a standout among Oahu luxury hotels, diverted 1 million pounds from the landfill by recycling and converting waste to generate electricity in 2010. The hotel also reduced electricity consumption by 2.5 million kilowatt hours over the last three years through a comprehensive energy conservation program.

JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa recent green initiatives:

  • 1 million pounds of waste diverted from landfill by recycling and converting waste to generate electricity in 2010.
  • Achieved an average savings of 2.5 million kilowatt hours per year from 2007 ‐ 2010 through a comprehensive energy conservation program.
  • Water conservation program that utilizes salt resistant grass in lawns thereby preserving precious drinking water by using brackish water for irrigation.
  • Community involvement to protect the environment such as the annual Beach Clean Up with Boy Scouts of America.
  • Incorporating environmental resources into the guest experience such as ocean water for sting ray ponds and salt water therapies in the Spa. This also preserves drinking water.
  • Offering Green Meetings where biodegradable plates and utensils is used and waste is recycled.

  • Completion of a self-audit checklist evaluating their environmental practices ranging from pollution prevention to water and energy conservation
  • Recycling
  • Environmental purchasing
  • Sharing information with other participants
  • Attending forums and workshops on greening practices
  • Participating in quarterly Hawaii Green Business meetings

The Hawaii Green Business program partners with hotels and resorts on green initiatives, due to the visitor industry's cumulative impact on the environment.
