FERNANDINA BEACH, FL--(Marketwire - Nov 21, 2011) - While summers in Florida are usually for hitting the beach and soaking up the sun, the staff at the Residence Inn Amelia Island, among Amelia Island, FL hotels, did something else to warm their hearts. In June 2011, they joined the local Relay for Life/American Cancer Society fundraising efforts, raising $1,200 throughout the year.

The Residence Inn Amelia Island, one of the newest hotels on Amelia Island, organized several events to benefit the American Cancer Society. Its first event, a car wash in the hotel parking lot, brought together guests and community residents, who donated money or got their car washed. Hotel staff pitched in with everything from washing and drying to waving signs by the road to draw in donations.

Guests of our Amelia Island, FL lodging had another chance to donate with our summer sweet-tooth sale, offering Georgia and Florida chocolate bars at the front desk. Money raised from the candy sale went straight to the American Cancer Society.

The staff at the Residence Inn Amelia Island pitched in throughout the year to help the cause. For a $5 donation, staff at our Amelia Island lodging could take advantage of casual dress Fridays, which took on a number of themes, including purple and jeans for the Relay for Life, pink and jeans to honor those who have and are battling breast cancer, and Florida and Georgia team colors to commemorate the recent game.

Fundraising in Florida is never complete without taking the efforts outdoors. The Bark for Life in Fernandina Beach's Central Park brought pet owners together for a short relay, with booths and a raffle for a 2-night stay at the pet-friendly Residence Inn Amelia Island. The last event of the year was the official Relay for Life, held November 5th and 6th at Yulee High School. The Residence Inn Amelia Island team decked their tent out in winter decorations and chose the theme of "Freeze Out Cancer" for its float. The day was filled with games, food and entertainment, with a touching luminary lighting after sunset, each luminary marked with the name of someone who had lost their battle with cancer. The year's events were a success in bringing together staff, guests and community members for a good cause, and helped raised $1,200 for the American Cancer Society.
