INNISFAIL, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Nov. 24, 2011) - At approximately 12:00 PM on November 22, 2011, as a result of the vigilance of staff at Bowden Institution, a medium security federal penitentiary located in Innisfail, Alberta, a package with suspicious content was recovered on the institution's perimeter. Upon inspection, cell phones, hash oil, heroin, crystal meth and other contraband items were concealed in the package. The estimated institutional value of the drugs seized is $41,420.00.
The police were notified and the institution is investigating.
The Correctional Service Canada (CSC) has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These tools include ion scanners and drug dogs to search buildings, offenders, and visitors.
CSC is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone, and promote a rehabilitative environment for inmates. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against inmates and others who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.
