Ottawa Affordable Housing Workshop Thinks Green

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 24, 2011) - Spurred by a common vision and commitment to creating more energy-efficient affordable housing, more than 80 people participated in The Greening Affordable Housing Workshop held today in Ottawa. The event was part of National Housing Day celebrations being held across Canada to recognize the importance of affordable housing in our communities.

The event was hosted by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), the City of Ottawa and the Social Housing Services Corporation (SHSC), along with community partners Centretown Citizens Ottawa Corporation (CCOC) and The Registry.

"This event is an example of how we can all leverage our expertise and share ideas to build housing that is both sustainable and affordable," said Peter Friedmann, General Manager, Ontario Region and Managing Director, Securitization, CMHC. "We're very proud to work with our partners on the common goal of creating strong and vibrant communities."

Municipal officials, non-profit housing providers and housing developers gathered to celebrate the successes and share the experiences of housing providers who have developed green initiatives within affordable housing as well as across the housing system.

"This workshop has brought together housing providers and leaders in the community," said Janice Burelle, Administrator, Housing Services Branch, City of Ottawa. "The event not only raises awareness but also showcases the impact that green housing technology has had on affordable and social housing from multiple perspectives ranging from design to improved quality of life for residents here in Ottawa."

Presenters at the workshop shared insights on constructing and renovating affordable housing that incorporates renewable energy technology and promotes sustainable resident lifestyles.
