Plan Cloud Storage First Says Likewise CTO Jerry Carter

Offers cloud storage primer at USENIX LISA '11 conference

USENIX LISA '11, BOSTON, Dec. 5, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Before committing to cloud or virtualization technologies, Likewise chief technology officer, Jerry Carter suggests that companies must think first about all the unstructured data or "big data" -- financial files, medical records, office documents and media, which accounts for nearly half of all stored information - and review existing cross-platform security protocols for storing that data.

Carter will be offering a cloud storage primer at the USENIX LISA ’11 Conference on December 6 at 9 a.m. The conference runs from December 4-9. Carter will also lead an afternoon session on "Wireshark and the Art of Debugging Networks."

"Administrators and developers are looking for answers about cloud storage providers, APIs (application programming interfaces) and end-user devices," said Carter. "The term ‘cloud’ means different things to different people. Adding ‘storage’ to the phrase makes the concept more concrete by applying the concept of elastic computing to something everyone produces and consumes each day--data. However, it is still necessary to navigate a maze of both terminology and offerings before arriving at any decisions."

The LISA ’11 -- 25th Large Installation System Administration Conference is sponsored by USENIX in cooperation with LOPSA (The League of Professional System Administrators). For more information, visit www.usenix.org/events/lisa11.
