AMA Policy-Making Meeting Begins Final Day of Voting


CHICAGO, June 20, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The nation's broadest assembly of physicians will convene this morning for its final day of voting on proposals that will shape the health care agenda of the American Medical Association (AMA), the country's largest physician organization.

The House of Delegates is the AMA's primary policy-making body consisting of an inclusive group of physicians and medical students representing every state and specialty. Delegates will work in a legislative forum to create a national physician consensus on emerging medical issues in public health, science, ethics, education, business and government.

Among the health care issues expected today to be considered by proposed policies include:

  • Exclusive use of beverages taxes to help fight obesity
  • Adverse health effects of excessive nighttime lighting
  • Sales of tobacco in pharmacies

The AMA House of Delegates will convene for voting at 8:00 a.m. (CT) in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Chicago. This final legislative session is expected to proceed today until 11:00 a.m. (CT).
