June Housing Starts in New Brunswick

MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - July 10, 2012) - Residential construction activity in New Brunswick's urban centres was up in June according to figures released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Preliminary data1 indicate that a total of 398 starts were recorded during the month compared to 350 starts for the same period in 2011.

"The year-over-year increase in residential housing starts observed during the month of June in provincial urban centres is primarily the result of a notable increase in single-detached starts and significant gains in multiples activity in Moncton," said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's senior market analyst for New Brunswick. Single starts in June were at 205 units in provincial urban centres compared to last year's total of 167 units for the month. In comparison, multiple starts were relatively stable for the month of June, with a 10 unit increase to 193 starts.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in June were up 12 per cent to 18,144 units compared to 16,244, a year ago. Single-detached starts decreased five per cent to 6,923 units, while multiple starts increased 25 per cent to 11,221 units in June. In the Atlantic region, 1,121 new units were started compared to 1,055 units during June 2011.
