Alleyoop Launches Into Science With NASA eClips, National Science Foundation and Other STEM Leaders

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - Aug 16, 2012) -  STEM might be the most important four letters for a teen's future. Today, Alleyoop, the online game-infused way to get young people ready for college, broadens its STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) offerings through collaborators like NASA eClips, and partners including National Geographic, Scientific Minds, Patrick JMT, Virtual Nerd, Adaptive Curriculum and Brightstorm.

"We launched Alleyoop in February, helping students with their most immediate need, math. But today's teens understand that math is only one of the key subjects they need for success in both college and fast-growing careers," said Patrick Supanc, president of Alleyoop. "They've been asking Alleyoop for more STEM, so today we're unveiling dynamic, interactive content that plugs perfectly into the Alleyoop experience. Expanding our subject matter is another step towards Alleyoop's broader vision to empower teens to be ready to succeed in college and in life."

Teens need STEM to thrive in the 21st century economy. The U.S. Department of Commerce's Economics and Statistics Administration reports that over the past decade, growth in STEM careers was three times greater than non-STEM careers. As this growth continues, young adults entering the job market need the critical thinking and problem solving skills that are paramount in STEM education.

NASA eClips™
NASA eClips knows that teens love to explore! This video library is all about showing real-world careers and applications for the STEM subjects children learn in school. Students on Alleyoop will have access to NASA eClips, Real World and Launchpad content that takes them everywhere from the edge of space to the science in their own backyard.

"Multimedia is a powerful way to engage students in STEM," said Rebecca Jaramillo, Senior Educator with the Center for Integrative STEM Education at the National Institute of Aerospace, which produces NASA eClips. "Our goal is to help students see themselves as scientists and engineers. Through the exciting lens of NASA these videos encourage students to ask questions and help them make important connections to potential careers. This is why we are delighted to collaborate with Alleyoop."

National Geographic
Alleyoop has selected nearly 300 video titles from one of the world's largest non-profit, scientific and educational membership organizations, National Geographic, to supplement teens' study of subjects from animal behavior to chemistry. These captivating visuals are aligned with STEM topics students are learning in school, driving them to keep their learning moving forward outside of the classroom.

"National Geographic is an excellent source of exceptionally high-quality learning content," explained Supanc. "Their quick videos demonstrate how science relates to the real-world, and will ultimately fuel a student's interest in and passion for STEM subjects."

National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation's (NSF) Science360 app gives students up-to-date breaking science news from around the world. Science Nation and Chalk talk are video series that feature the latest in STEM innovation, from the scientists, engineers and professionals who are out in the field. These series help students understand why subjects are important to learn and make potential career connections early in a teen's academic career.

Other partners and collaborators include:

  • Adaptive Curriculum - Real world, interactive scenarios that give students context for science lessons across the board.
  • Brightstorm - Video lessons from the best teachers around the nation, covering biology, chemistry and physics.
  • Patrick JMT - Hundreds of video activities from geometry, trigonometry to statistics and probability.
  • Scientific Minds - Quizzes and interactive biology flashcards that turn students into critical thinkers.
  • Virtual Nerd - More than 100 interactive whiteboard tutorials in math and physics.
