Media Advisory: HRH the Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, to Honour the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry

HAMILTON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 5, 2012) -

Editors Note: There are backgrounders associated with this press release.

His Royal Highness The Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, will visit Hamilton on September 15, 2012 to take part in the 150th Anniversary celebrations of The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (RHLI). Prince Edward will be the Reviewing Officer for a rare military "Trooping of the Colour" ceremony on the tarmac at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum at Hamilton International Airport in Mt. Hope beginning at 3:00 p.m.

His Royal Highness will fly directly into Hamilton airport. The event is expected to last about an hour, and will be followed by a private tour of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.

In addition to His Royal Highness, guests of honour will include the Honorable David Onley, Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, and Lieutenant-General Peter Devlin, Commander Canadian Army. Both will be speaking at the Trooping along with His Royal Highness, and Tim Hogarth, Honorary Colonel of the RHLI and President and CEO of Pioneer Energy.

The public is invited to attend. There is no charge, but the public space is "standing only" and parking will be in the Hamilton International Airport long-term visitor parking area at their usual rates. In the event of inclement weather the ceremony will be held indoors.

The Trooping is a colourful and uncommon military event. It was last performed by the RHLI in 1962, when they received their current Colours from Governor-General Georges Vanier at Ivor Wynn Stadium. The Trooping is a ceremony originally designed to ensure soldiers could recognize their regimental flag in the heat of battle, where it would serve as a rallying point for the troops.
