BIRMINGHAM, MI--(Marketwire - Sep 13, 2012) - Michigan Retailers Association (MRA) is recommending a "No" vote on all of the November 6 ballot proposals except the referendum on the Emergency Manager law, which it supports.
The announcement was made today by MRA President and CEO James P. Hallan during an address to the Michigan Committee of the International Council of Shopping Centers.
"The Emergency Manager law is an effective tool for the state to help local governments avoid bankruptcy," said Hallan. "Retailers are an integral part of their communities and, like all residents, can be harmed when local finances are in disarray."
The referendum is Proposal 1 on the statewide ballot.
Proposals 2-6 are proposed constitutional amendments that MRA believes should be defeated, Hallan said.
"These proposals do not represent good public policy and should not be part of our state constitution," he said.
The positions were adopted by the MRA Board of Directors after review of all of the measures.
Michigan Retailers Association represents nearly 5,000 members and their more than 15,000 stores and websites in Michigan. Retail is responsible for nearly one in five jobs in Michigan's economy: 405,000 direct jobs in retail stores and more than 385,000 jobs in related and supporting industries.
