Akron Chiropractor Promotes Value of Acupuncture for Natural Pain Management

AKRON, Ohio, Sept. 23, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Natural Health Center of Akron is educating pain patients about the benefits of acupuncture treatments as part of holistic pain management. According to Akron chiropractor and licensed acupuncturist Dr. Randy Dunn, acupuncture can help manage pain following an auto accident injury or sports injury. Dr. Dunn says that the treatment is also effective for relieving back pain, neck pain and headaches. The chiropractor regular integrates acupuncture with other holistic care into pain management treatment plans.

Akron chiropractor Dr. Randy Dunn is encouraging patients who struggle with chronic pain to try acupuncture treatments. "Akron residents who are not familiar with the benefits of acupuncture for pain management may be surprised to learn just how successful these treatments really are," said Dr. Dunn. "From chronic back pain to headaches these treatments can make a big difference for a patient's overall well-being."

During a treatment, Dr. Dunn inserts long, thin needles into pressure points in a patient's body. Stimulating pressure points is designed to stimulate internal healing. According to this alternative medicine, energy in the body flows along meridians. When a meridian is blocked, an individual experiences pain, illness and injury.

To determine the exact location of pressure points requiring stimulation, Dr. Dunn uses an Acugraph computer. This machine takes precise readings of the body's energy meridians. In addition to using needles to stimulate pressure points, Dr. Dunn also uses electrical stimulation at his health center. The chiropractor does stress that acupuncture is not a "quick fix," but an important component of a long-term pain management strategy.

"Over a series of treatments, we can effectively stimulate the body's meridians to promote internal healing," said Dr. Dunn. "While patients can experience pain relief after just one or two sessions, the greatest benefits are cumulative after a full series of sessions."

Most patients receive a series of eight to sixteen sessions, meeting with Dr. Dunn several times per week based on their wellness needs. In addition to acupuncture treatments, Dr. Dunn may also recommend massage therapy or physiotherapy for pain management.

"Depending on the patient's injury, an integrated approach to holistic care typically delivers the best results," said Dr. Dunn. "For example, if a patient is suffering from back pain, the addition of massage therapy supports internal healing. Physiotherapy exercise can safely restore movement and flexibility to the body. Our goal is not only to relieve pain, but also to support whole body wellness and long-term health."

Dr. Dunn received his acupuncture certification in 2002. The Akron chiropractor trained under the renowned teacher Richard Yennie, one of the most awarded acupuncturists in the world. In May 2012, Dr. Dunn traveled to China to study acupuncture and QiQong. While there he also attended the 2nd Annual Integrative Medicine Symposium in Beijing.
