BRUCE-GREY COUNTY, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 2, 2012) - On November 25, 2011, 46 dogs and one bird were removed from a property in Southgate, Bruce-County after an Ontario SPCA warrant was executed. Christine Young-Leuverink was charged with five counts under the Criminal Code and subsequently pleaded guilty.

Five counts were laid under the Criminal Code:

  • Three counts for willful neglect
  • Two counts for failing to provide suitable and adequate care

Mastiff type dogs were found in every room of the house including a flooded basement. Five basset hounds were found in a flooded pen in the backyard without shelter. The investigations revealed that the dogs were so hungry they were eating garbage and household items. Most of the dogs were extremely thin; many had bite wounds and eye infections. All were infested with lice.

On August 28th 2012 Ms. Young-Leuverink was sentenced to:

  • Three month conditional sentence order (includes House Arrest, Monitoring and standard clauses for good behaviour and counselling)
  • 12 months probation
  • 15 year animal prohibition
