BRUCE-GREY COUNTY, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 2, 2012) - On November 25, 2011, 46 dogs and one bird were removed from a property in Southgate, Bruce-County after an Ontario SPCA warrant was executed. Christine Young-Leuverink was charged with five counts under the Criminal Code and subsequently pleaded guilty.
Five counts were laid under the Criminal Code:
- Three counts for willful neglect
- Two counts for failing to provide suitable and adequate care
Mastiff type dogs were found in every room of the house including a flooded basement. Five basset hounds were found in a flooded pen in the backyard without shelter. The investigations revealed that the dogs were so hungry they were eating garbage and household items. Most of the dogs were extremely thin; many had bite wounds and eye infections. All were infested with lice.
On August 28th 2012 Ms. Young-Leuverink was sentenced to:
- Three month conditional sentence order (includes House Arrest, Monitoring and standard clauses for good behaviour and counselling)
- 12 months probation
- 15 year animal prohibition
"No animal should ever have to go without," says Senior Inspector Grandel. "If you aren't able to provide for the animals in your care, then take the necessary steps to contact us and we can offer suggestions."
