Ontario SPCA Provides an Update on the Marineland Investigation

NEWMARKET, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 3, 2012) - The Ontario SPCA has been thoroughly conducting an investigation of Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario. This investigation includes all animals at the Marineland facilities including marine life and wildlife.

The Ontario SPCA Officers have identified some areas of concern where certain deficiencies exist and we are addressing those concerns. We have brought in experts to assist our Officers with these assessments. At this point in the investigation, recommendations have been made to Marineland and the Ontario SPCA will be following up to ensure that these areas of concern are being addressed.

We want to remind the public that the investigation is still ongoing. Due to the large number of animals, totaling 13 different species, along with all appropriate documentation and in consultation with various experts, it does take time to properly investigate the allegations that have been brought forth. The Ontario SPCA will continue their investigation; in addition, the Society will be making several unannounced visits throughout the year to ensure animal care compliance.

It is important that the public understands that any animal found to be under the care of a licensed veterinarian is exempt under the Ontario SPCA Act under Sec. 11.1(3)(a) and therefore is removed from the Society's investigation.

The Ontario SPCA wants to preserve the integrity of this investigation and as such the Society will not be commenting on the finer details of this case.

The Ontario SPCA will be providing updates on this case as more information is available to share. This information will be posted on our website www.ontariospca.ca.
