U of T Study Shows Antioxidant-Rich Supplement May Help Prevent Destruction of Bone

November is National Osteoporosis Month

OTTAWA, Canada, Nov. 5, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A human study involving the participation of post menopausal women was carried out at Calcium Research Laboratory, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Medicine at St Michael's Hospital and Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Toronto.

The results of the study have shown that women that consumed greens+ bone builder had 12% lower CTx, a major marker of bone destruction and predictor of future fracture risk, compared to placebo, which did not show any change.

The objective of the study was to evaluate whether the antioxidant properties of greens+ with the nutritional components of bone builder will help in reducing the risk of developing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

greens+ bone builderTM, manufactured and distributed by Genuine Health, a Canadian company, based in Toronto ON, is a synergistic blend of the most powerful bone-building antioxidants, vitamins and minerals including Vitamins C, D3, Lycopene and 3 forms of Calcium, plus a base of the highly alkaline-forming, nutrient-rich greens+, a synergistic blend of over 23 plant-based ingredients.

The study findings were presented at the 2012 Canadian Nutritional Society (CNS) meeting. Part of the study recently published in the Journal of Aging Research & Clinical Practice, showed that a daily supplementation with greens+ bone builder increased the antioxidant capacity and reduced the oxidative markers thus possibly reducing the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

Oxidative stress is an important factor in the development of osteoporosis. Antioxidants counteract the damaging effect of oxidative stress, which may reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Nutritional supplements, such as greens+ and greens+ bone builder that contain water-soluble polyphenols and other micronutrients beneficial for bone health, are of recent interest as complementary strategies in the management of osteoporosis.

Dr. Leticia Rao, corresponding author on the study, says "Previous in vitro results from our laboratory have shown that greens+ and bone builder, when tested separately,  were effective in stimulating osteoblasts to form bone nodules. When greens+ and bone builder were tested in combination, the effects were six times more effective than either one alone. This led us to believe that the additive effects of greens+ bone builder have a beneficial effect in reducing oxidative stress and may reduce the risk of osteoporosis."

The study results proved that the phytonutrient antioxidants in greens+ bone builder are indeed well-absorbed and are functional once in the bloodstream.  The results support previous research showing that women that consumed greens+ bone builder had 12% lower CTx, a major marker of bone destruction and predictor of future fracture risk, compared to placebo, which did not show any change. They also suggest that supplementing with greens+ bone builder may play a role in decreasing oxidative stress and therefore may reduce risk of developing osteoporosis in post menopausal women.
