CBC Calgary and Suncor Energy have launched their 27th annual CBC Calgary Suncor Energy Food Bank Drive. Live this morning on CBC Radio One's The Calgary Eyeopener, Suncor Energy kick started this year's campaign with a $50,000 donation to help reach the goal of $1 million for the Calgary Food Bank.
With the generous support of Calgarians over the last 26 years, the CBC Calgary Suncor Energy Food Bank Drive has raised more than $12 million for the Calgary Food Bank. It has become one of the organization's key fundraising campaigns.
"In many ways Calgary is considered the land of plenty; but for the more than 136,000 clients who visited the Calgary Food Bank this past year, clearly this is not the case," said Steve Williams, president and CEO, Suncor. "At first glance our fundraising goal of $1 million might seem ambitious, but it's what we need to raise to help build a Calgary without hunger."
New this year is a limited edition t-shirt designed for the CBC Calgary Suncor Energy Food Bank Drive by local chef, food writer and t-shirt aficionado, Pierre Lamielle. A limited number of t-shirts will be available during the CBC Calgary Suncor Energy Food Bank Drive. Pierre has designed a new and funky way for Calgarians to give to this important campaign. Pick one up at CBC Calgary or the Suncor Energy Centre donation desk before the last one disappears!
For Calgarians looking to participate in this campaign, there are many ways to donate:
- Online at calgaryfoodbank.com/feedyyc or cbc.ca/calgary
- At The CBC Broadcast Centre and the Calgary Food Bank
- At the Suncor Energy Centre donation desk (until December 20)
- At Petro-Canada stations in Calgary (non-perishable food only, until December 20)
- At Fifth Avenue Place (weekday mornings until December 24)
"For nearly 30 years, the annual Food Bank Drive has been an important part of CBC Calgary," said Alan Thorgeirson, Managing Director, CBC Calgary. "Our radio, television and on-line platforms allow us to connect those who can help with those who need it most. We are proud of our affiliation with the Calgary Food Bank, our partners and the continued efforts to create a hunger free Calgary."
"The Calgary Food Bank nurtures these relationships with individuals and businesses - we believe we must work together if we want to achieve a hunger-free community," said James McAra, CEO of the Calgary Food Bank. "The multitude of events, donors, and volunteers throughout the CBC Calgary Suncor Energy Food Bank Drive is a demonstration of the power of collective action. Together, we are feeding the possibility of a Calgary without hunger."
