Canadian Sponsored Resolution Against Iran Receives Overwhelming Support at the United Nations

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 20, 2012) - Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies (FSWC) has praised the Government of Canada for leading the United Nations General Assembly to adopt a resolution condemning the situation of human rights in Iran.

"We are so proud of our government and the role it has taken to support the voices of Iranians struggling against a brutal theocratic regime," noted FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo. "This resolution will let Iranians know the world has not forgotten them; it offers a small ray of hope at a time when millions of Iranians continue to suffer the effects of a dangerous dictatorship, and all Canadians should applaud this effort."

"This resolution, on the heels of Canada's decision to list the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps - Qods Force as a terrorist entity, shows this country's moral courage and true dedication to human rights here at home and around the world," he added.

The resolution, which condemned the use of cruel and inhuman punishment in Iran, as well as the stark increase in executions and ongoing discrimination and human rights violations, was adopted by the General Assembly by a vote of 86 - 32.
