CALGARY, AB--(Marketwire - Dec 27, 2012) - The holidays are about friends and family, but they're also about food -- and lots of it. While most of us may be contemplating a second slice of pie, there are those who are less fortunate, and the Calgary Marriott Downtown Hotel has pledged to help. With its involvement with The Chef Table organization, this luxury hotel in Calgary is helping to feed the local community.

The Chef Table "sustainable food brokerage" brings caterers, Calgary event planners, chefs and cooks together with local food banks to redistribute food surpluses to those in need, and the Calgary Marriott Downtown Hotel is excited to be working with them. The hotel not only provides beautiful accommodations in Calgary, but also focuses on paying it forward, which is especially important during the holiday season.

"The hotel's participation in the program provides us with the opportunity to give back to the community in a huge way," says executive chef, Eric Larcom at the Calgary Marriott Downtown Hotel. "The program has everyone, right down to the cooks, involved, excited and eager to help. We don't like to see food go to waste, and with this new program in place we'll be seeing food surpluses go to a great cause instead of a landfill. We will be able to provide up to 150 meals a week at the peak of our business season, and the little extra care and work it takes pales in comparison to the results."

This hotel began its work with The Chef Table in late November 2012. Staff have taken an extra step to give back by volunteering at the local food bank as well. In addition to the redistribution of food surpluses, The Chef Table works with the community in the preparation of ready-to-eat meals to profit food banks and to educate underprivileged youth on nutrition and the culinary arts.
