MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Jan. 9, 2013) - Concordia University's John Molson School of Business and Montreal-based accounting firm Fuller Landau LLP have begun their annual search for Quebec's leading family-owned businesses for the 2013 Fuller Landau Family Business Awards.

Now in its third year, the awards recognize family-owned businesses whose practices have a positive impact on the community and stimulate economic growth. The program was created as part of a broader commitment from the accounting firm to encourage local family-business development.

"Family-owned businesses are the unsung heroes of our economy," says Michael Newton, Managing Partner of Fuller Landau LLP. "They employ a vast number of people in Quebec, are often innovators and tend to support the local communities in ways that too often go unnoticed. We are delighted to recognize their impact and to help propel them forward with this award."

Each submission will be evaluated based on financial success, quality of business and family linkages, multi-generational family involvement, contributions to the community and the industry, and innovative business practices or strategies.

"Family-owned businesses are ubiquitous in Quebec, but we still have a way to go in providing them with optimal training, resources and other support programs," says Dr. Alexandra Dawson, Assistant Professor of Management at the John Molson School of Business. "We encourage all Quebecers to consider nominating a deserving family-based company. The nomination forms are available online, and are easy to complete."

The deadline to submit a nomination is February 28, 2013. Selected finalists will be invited to complete a full application form by March 31.

Nominations will be evaluated by a judging committee, comprised of five voting members: Dr. Alexandra Dawson (chair), Mr. Terry Didus, Partner at Heenan Blaikie LLP; Mr. J. Sebastian van Berkom, President and CEO of van Berkom and Associates Inc.; last year's winners Ms. Danièle Henkel, founder and president of Les Entreprises Daniele Henkel and Ms. Natanya Khazzam of Heritage Linencraft.

Awards will be handed out in three business categories: small, medium and large, based on staff count and revenues. The winners will be announced at the Fuller Landau Family Business Awards reception in May 2013. The event will also celebrate the winners of the Best Student Family Business Paper Awards.
