Diamond Jubilee Medal Awarded to Food Bankers

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Feb. 19, 2013) -

We've always known our folks are the best, but now all of Canada will know!

This Saturday, the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, His Honour Col. (Ret'd.) The Honourable Donald S. Ethell, will present three Alberta food bankers with the Diamond Jubilee Medal:

Thelma Henry is Manager of Operations at the Calgary Food Bank. Thelma elicits the question "How does she do it?" ...and hot on the heels of that is "How has she done it for so many years?" For 26 years, Thelma has treated everyone at the Calgary Food Bank as if they were a member of her own family. Not only does she know every volunteer and staff member in the building, she knows about their kids, their grandkids and even their dogs! A woman in a non-traditional role, she is unique in the world of logistics management.

Shiraz Haji has been volunteering at the Calgary Food Bank since 2005. 'One of a kind.' That's how people describe Shiraz. He started with one morning a week. That quickly evolved into two mornings a week, then three and now five! What drives his indomitable spirit and commitment? Shiraz says he loves the people and the huge satisfaction he gets from his work. "Volunteering," he says, "is an important part of my life and my religion. I am told to do for others, so I do….."

Pat Graham has been a volunteer with Mountain View Food Bank in Olds since its inception. Pat has been one of the driving forces behind the development of greater awareness of food insecurity issues in Olds and Mountain View County, motivated by her strong belief that no child should ever go hungry. Pat is tremendously proud of her community. "We have always helped our neighbours and it is wonderful to be a part of that. The Food Bank has never been let down."
