Seizure of Unauthorized Substances at Drummond Institution

DRUMMONDVILLE, QUÉBEC--(Marketwire - Feb. 26, 2013) - At approximately 1:00 p.m. on February 20, 2013, correctional officers intercepted an inmate who was attempting to introduce unauthorized substances into Drummond Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary located in Drummondville.

Upon inspection, a total of 150 grams of tobacco and 2 grams of marijuana were seized. The estimated institutional value of the seizure is $2,600.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) imposed a total smoking ban in all federal correctional facilities through a phased-approach on May 5, 2008.

CSC has set up a telephone Tip-Line at all federal institutions to provide an additional source for receiving information about activities that relate to the safety and security of CSC institutions. These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of people visiting, working at, or housed at a CSC facility.

CSC is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.
