ASMP Files Comments on Orphan Works With US Copyright Office

PHILADELPHIA, March 7, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) has submitted reply comments on the subject of Orphan Works and Mass Digitization in response to a US Copyright Office Notice of Inquiry. The comments state that attribution and registries, such as the one being developed by PLUS (Picture Licensing Universal System), are the solution for orphan works and that any return to increased formalities in order to obtain copyright protection would ultimately deter copyright registrations and harm users of copyrighted materials.

According to the filing by ASMP General Counsel Victor Perlman, "ASMP supports the Reply Comments submitted by ASMP's sister organization, the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA). In particular, ASMP believes that the two keys to minimizing or eliminating entirely the existence of orphan works are persistent attribution and registries."

ASMP has long been a leader on the issue of copyright and is actively involved in discussions regarding orphan works nationally and internationally. Read ASMP's comments here.
