CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - May 8, 2013) - Summer Camp Opportunities Promote Education (SCOPE Midwest) held its sixth annual benefit dinner April 12th at The Westin Hotel in Wheeling. Over 200 supporters attended and raised over $130,000 to help send underserved children throughout the Midwest to not-for-profit camps this summer. Radio and TV personality Melissa Forman, also known as the co-host for "You and Me This Morning," helped emcee the event that included cocktails, dinner, a silent auction and live music by Robbie Gold.
Highlights included Dayna Hardin presenting the Youth Advocate Award to AUSL (Academy of Urban School Leadership) which was founded by Arnie Duncan and Dr. Donald Feinstein for their work and commitment to improving the lives of children in our communities by turning around 25 of the lowest performing public schools in Chicago. Another highlight included the raffle prize for one lucky attendee who won a trip for two to the 2014 final two rounds of The Masters in Augusta.
The event was supported by a number of Midwest private camp directors who collaborate to help support not-for-profit camps through SCOPE Midwest, including Lake of the Woods and Greenwoods Camps, Camp Marimeta, Camp Horseshoe, Banner Day Camp, Tamarak Day Camp, Birch Trail, North Star, Camp Lincoln and Camp Lake Hubert, Towering Pines and Woodland, Discovery Day Camp.
SCOPE Midwest is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide children in need the edge to succeed in life through the summer camp experience.
An important adjunct to school, camp helps children develop the critical non-cognitive skills they need to succeed in life and provides children with a safe, structures environment in which to mature, grow, learn life skills and have fun. SCOPE helps provide these children the chance to step out of their everyday lives, escape violence of the inner city streets and enjoy being a kid.
Many teenagers who attend private camps in the Midwest have created SCOPE Clubs at their high schools to raise money for SCOPE camperships including New Trier and Francis Parker. Other children help fundraise for SCOPE Midwest by not only raising monies, but also collecting new camp supplies to give to SCOPE campers. Many of these children who attend overnight camp know how fortunate they are to have had these incredible experiences and want to help give less fortunate children the opportunity to experience summer camp.
This summer SCOPE Midwest will send over 200 children to not-for-profit camps this summer and hopes to continue giving deserving children the gift of camp.
